Homeschool Art: Elementary
Weekly on Wednesdays, 2-3pm
2 Enrollment Options:
Semester Long: January 14th - May 20th
Quarter Long: January 14th - March 11th
No class April 1st for Spring Break
This class will follow Frederick County Public Schools calendar and closures.
In this course elementary aged students will not only make awesome art, but also learn about the the big names in the art world (along with some less-known hidden gems) and engage in analysis and discussion about famous pieces and their own works! So often we believe that young children just want to make something with paint, and while that may be true at times, elementary aged students are bursting with curiosity; kids are eager to ask no less than one million questions about art and artists, they just need the opportunity. This class is designed to unleash curiosity, introduce students to new ideas and art worlds, and encourage critical thinking skills as they create and analyze works.
What to expect in each session:
Each unit (about 3 sessions) will explore an art movement, time period, or artist. Students will begin by exploring works that fit within the unit’s topic, learning to analyze works visually and encouraged to interpret and ask questions. We will then move onto the production portion of the unit where students will create a piece of artwork inspired by the subject matter, techniques, or mediums used by the artists they just learned about. During production students will practice sketching, giving/receiving feedback, and then completing their final piece.
Goals for this course:
Engaging in the world of art
Historical and cultural empathy and knowledge
Critical thinking and communication
Growth in artistic technique and skill
