M-Fer Clay Club - Intro to Ceramics
Dates: Mondays & Fridays (why else would this be called M-Fer Clay Club?)
Friday, July 11
Monday, July 14
Friday, July 18Due to gallery opening, rescheduled to Thursday, July 17Monday, July 21
(Make-up) Friday, July 25
Time: 6:30-9:00pm
Duration: 4 Sessions (1 make-up session)
Length of Each Session: 2.5 Hours
Class Focus: Basics of Hand-Building & Wheel Throwing
Join us for a playful exploration in the art of ceramics! Whether you’re a complete beginner or just looking to brush up on your skills, this class promises a fun and creative experience.
This mini-course will provide guided instruction to create a small bowl, a hand-built project (options provided to group by instructor), and how to apply glazes that, when combined, can have magical effects (unlike paint-your-own pottery glazes - though we have some of those too).
What You’ll Learn:
Hand-Building Techniques: Learn the art of pinch pots, coil building, and slab construction. You’ll discover how to create unique and expressive pieces with just your hands.
Wheel Throwing Basics: Get a feel for the potter’s wheel as you throw a bowl or trinket dish.
Included in Your Class:
5 Pounds of Clay: Enough to get your creativity flowing and complete the project.
All Necessary Tools & Glazes: We’ve got you covered with all the tools you need to unleash your inner artist—sponges, ribs, needles, glaze... you name it!
Kiln Firings: Natural clay is hardened and glaze is set using extreme heat - we use a kiln! We will take care of both the bisque firing (making the clay hard) and the glaze firing.
What to Expect:
Learning the basics: forming a pinch pot, additive and subtractive techniques, using a slab roller, joining and smoothing pieces, and throwing on the wheel.
The first 2 classes will be dedicated to working to create your pieces. Participants will take turns using the wheel, working on their hand-building project while not using the wheel. The 3rd class you’ll refine and add details to pieces - pieces will be fired after the 3rd class. In the last class you’ll glaze your pieces before the last firing. (There will be one make up class at the end of this course.)
You will have access to Open Studio hours! More information on this at the class.
What to Bring:
Wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting a bit messy.
An apron or kitchen towel if you’re worried about mess on your clothes.
